A TREE Style of Parenting?

An article appeared in my Facebook feed the other morning about a new popular style of parenting which is now being known as Submarine parenting. What I want to know is when did parenting become a battle and referred to in military items and terms…Helicopter, authoritarian and now submarine? I don’t know about you, but personally I do not want to battle my kids; I want to nurture them. Parenting is hard enough without putting these ideas of US against THEM into everyone’s heads. Especially our kids heads. I want them to feel like I am with them… not against them. This whole idea about referring to our parenting in styles is new to me. I always have thought as parenting as a type not a style. In  my The […]

Why We Walk For Autism Speaks and Our Encounter With a Protester!

NOTE: The following was posted last October after we completed the Autism Speaks Walk. It is that time of year again and we are forming our team to do it again. I often feel a bit guilty telling folks that we are walking for Autism Speaks because part of me does not care for the way they do things. But I believe they are changing. The Autism Speaks VOTE video is incredible and actually features many Autistic individuals in it! I think they heard us and they get it. Either way we do the walk because JAY wants to do it! I have so many new readers since last year, so I thought I would repost this so you can see why we walk and […]

“Being autistic means that you get to be incredibly happy!” Guest Post by Kasey Smith

EDITORS NOTE: The incredible thing about the internet is the ability to meet all sorts of people from all over the world. I love the community page I have on Facebook. It is a positive place where everyone shares what they feel and knows that others will not jump all over them, even if they differ in opinion. The fact that it is a safe place is why I believe I have been fortunate to have so many grownups with Aspergers join us. I love this more than I can explain! These incredible folks are able to share their first hand insight with us and make me understand things that I just never would have gotten without them. One of those folks who enlightened me […]

Boxers vs Briefs

I happened to pass by my boy’s room while he was getting dressed this morning and noticed that he was wearing boxer briefs instead of his usual tighty whities. So of course I asked him about it. His response was, “MOM… for now on I will wear boxer briefs on A days (which is the day he has PE) and my regular comfy tighty whities on B days.” He must have noticed my puzzled look because he sighed and continued on saying, “Mom I happened to notice that the other boys were wearing boxers and well… you know!” Okay folks there are just too many things about this that are awesome but I cannot go into them right now because I need to run […]

It’s My Birthday TODAY and this is what I plan on wishing for when I blow out the candles…

I could wish for this… or I could wish to go here… Or at least like I was there by eating this… then I could wish that even if I ate all that I still was able to do this… But even though I would love to not have to worry about money, to travel to Italy, to dine and wine like there is no tomorrow and to be THIN… That is not what I will be wishing for when I blow out all 43 of my candles on my homemade cake that my baby girl loving made following the recipe in her cake Boss Cook Book she got for her birthday. No what I will wish for has to do with this…To see that […]

Back to School CHEERS AND TEARS

So by the title of this post you are probably making guesses as to who is shedding the tears and who is screaming the cheers. Well believe it or not they are both ME!!! Yup folks, the same woman who put a countdown clock on her page (Just look over to the top right and you will see it there) to remind her of the beloved day that school starts back… yup the same woman who is longing for the quiet, for the structure and time to actually get her writing and work done. Yes folks now that the time is quickly approaching I am sad! I am also scared out of mind. I am more nervous for Jay to start middle school then he […]

Review & GIVEAWAY of “Should I or Shouldn’t I? What Would Others Think?”- A game to encourage Social Thinking and social problem solving!

Those that follow me on Facebook know how nervous I have been about Jay starting middle school. Part of my neurosis  comes from the fact that I just don’t think he is socially ready. Academically… no problem, but can he handle all the situations that will be thrown his way?And what can I do as his mother to give him the tools to do so?  These questions have been keeping me up at night. That is why I was so excited when Social Thinking gave me the opportunity to try out this new game created by Dominque Baudry,MS, Ed  and based on the Social Thinking concepts and vocabulary introduced by Michelle Garcia Winner as outlined in her many books and articles on the topic. The game is […]

I’m Just an Autism Mom- Making Things Up As I GO!!!

As I try to write about something that left me so raw, so emotionally drained that I just could not help but fall into bed last night exhausted; I have the boy in the other room Screaming “POW”, “WHAM”, THWAP” as he watches his batman DVD and the girl is sitting behind me giggling over an online episode of Victorious she is watching on the Ipad. This is my life! It is noisy, loud and totally chaotic and I would not change a moment of it! That is not to say that I would not prefer to fast forward thru some parts of it and speed up to get to the happily ever after parts I so pray we all have. Although then I would […]

Things To Do When You Are Home Sick- by my 8 year old daughter Gracie

Mama’s Editor’s Note: Okay folks my daughter wrote this and asked that I share it with you all. It is so cute I had too! Feel free to leave Gracie a comment and make sure to check out the story we wrote together (mostly her I just typed) while she was home. It is found under Gracie’s Turn Now Tab above. Okay without further ado… Gracie’s post! Hey folks, it’s Gracie here. First, I’d like to apologize. I know I haven’t written a post in a while. HEY, girls are busy. O.K. the last couple of days I’ve been sick. YUCK. At first I was a bit bored. But then I decided to make a list of things to do while you are home from […]

Birthdays and ASD kids… NOT AN EASY MIX!

The party has come and gone and well… we made it! Not only did we make it… we did great! Although it was touch and go there for a bit. Look at this. My Facebook status on Saturday at 8:30am: Oh lord please grant me the serenity to get through today because my voice has already raised many times and they have only been up for 30 minutes. The boy is soooooo over excited that when I asked him to please stop playing with the balloon and to go up and put a long sleeve shirt on under his Laser Tag short sleeve shirt he lost it! Screaming, red face, tears! Oh it is going to be an interesting day! Birthday parties and ASD kids… […]
