It’s Memorial Day weekend and as I stopped to think about all the brave men and woman who gave their lives to protect us and secure our freedom… I started thinking about all those folks mothers and fathers too. Especially the mothers. Moms who gave up so much to raise their children and then the pain they must have felt and still do feel now that they are gone. That got me thinking about all the other moms in my life too and the pain and difficulties they have in their lives now. And well before I knew it, it got me thinking about me and how I am as a mom and yes my difficulties. Which of course then got me thinking about who I am as a person too! I know a lot of thinking for such a short weekend huh?
Earlier this month I blogged about how I am finally putting on my Oxygen mask. This occurred to me after reading a novel called MOMNESIA by Lori Verni-Fogarsi. In fact I loved the book so much that I started communicating with Lori and she even did a guest post blog for me which you can find HERE. I want to tell you more about this book and then give you a chance to get a FREE COPY for yourself compliments of a very generous LORI!
This book is fictional but I could relate to so much it. Maybe not the getting divorced from my hubby part as thankfully my guy and I are doing just fine, but the whole idea of feeling as just a CARETAKER… hello that is so me. The whole concept of MOMNESIA which the author defines as a noun meaning- “Loss of memory of who you used to be caused by pregnancy, play dates and trying to keep the house cleaner than the Joneses”… well that is so me too! And the question that the main character keeps struggling with throughout the story, “Is it that I haven’t been myself? Or is it that I am being myself but just differently than I use to be?” is one I think many moms can relate to, at least I do!!!
For me the part that really hit home is when our heroine concluded that being a PERFECT PARENT could actually be more harmful to her children then letting them see her being her REAL SELF! WOW… is that good stuff or what? I so agree with this. What message do I send to my kids by doing that? My kids need to know that June Cleaver and Carol Brady only exist on TV . (Okay not that they would have any idea who those people are but you know what I mean.) It is okay that they see me angry, see me make mistakes, see me as a woman and not just a mom!
The best part about this book is that it is funny. Lori is able to deal with some serious soul-searching concepts in a humorous and light way. She even puts in some off-color “sexual stuff” just to keep things steamy. This is the perfect quick read book to take with you to the beach or pool this summer! Which brings me to the GIVEAWAY part of this post!!!
