Bowling is a family friendly recreational activity. Yet, because of the very nature of the activity many families with children with autism or other sensory / neurodevelopmental disorders may feel there are just too many obstacles to be able to enjoy this popular pastime.
But Bowl America Dranesville wants to change that. They are offering a special Sensory Friendly Event on April 2nd, 2012 from 9am to 11am which just so happens to be the first day of Spring Break and World Autism Awareness Day. All ages are welcome to come out and socialize with other families and enjoy this safe, sensory friendly environment while supporting a great cause.
- No leagues, field trips or parties scheduled during this time
- No Cosmic Lights (Flashing disco lights or glow in the dark lighting) or music playing
- Use of the PA system will be restricted
- A special “Quiet Room” will be available for sensory breaks if needed
- Bumpers available on lanes
- Snack Bar available to purchase food or participants on restricted diets ( gluten-casein free, sugar free, etc.) permitted to bring in their own snacks
Cost for the event is $6 per a person and includes: 1 game of bowling, shoe rental and a $1 donation to Autism Speaks. Reservations are strongly recommended. To reserve your place please contact the center directly at: 703-430-1350. Ask to speak with the Manager on Duty and let him know that you are reserving for the Autism Speaks party. If you wish to bowl near or next to another family, let them know and they will do everything possible to accommodate the request. The day of the event, you will simply pay the $6.00 per person at the door, receive your lane assignment(s) and receive a coupon to get your shoes at the desk. Reservations should be made by the close of business, Saturday, March 31st. They will accept walk ins, but once again, reservations are strongly recommended.
Bowl America Dranesville has also generously donated a Special Bowling Party for 6 Certificate that will be raffled off during the event. The party features 2 games and use of shoes, plus a soft drink for up to 6 players. The retail value is $100.00. Raffle tickets will be sold for $1 each and all money will be donated to Autism Speaks!
I am putting together a Bowling Social Story that will include actual pictures of the Dranesville center that I can email to you to help prepare your child as to what to expect. Send your request to: firstname.lastname@example.org.
Hope to see you all there! Please make sure to pass this information on. The more successful the event is, the more likely this center and others will do it again, and that benefits all our kids!!!
